The Artist’s Hand: Selections from The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation brings together work by seventy artists from one of the most progressive and unique collections in the United States. The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation is a collection that Louis-Dreyfus put together over the course of more than fifty years. The collection spans different time periods and continents and shows Louis-personal Dreyfus’s sense of beauty, curiosity, and love of collecting.

William Louis-Dreyfus, who lived from 1932 to 2016, bought art without any bias. He didn’t care about what was popular in the art world or what the market said about how much it was worth. Louis-Dreyfus had an open mind, a never-ending intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to learn and be surprised. He wanted to keep learning about visual art because he loved being amazed by an artist’s unique and creative path. He didn’t know the difference between high art and low art, so he mixed them together freely in a collection that is different in style but the same in depth and visual imagination.

The Artist’s Hand gives a full picture of the collector’s compelling vision by looking at how he tried to learn the visual language and techniques of the artists he collected. He was especially interested in how artists made their art, and Louis-Dreyfus grew to like the creative process of artists. He would often talk about how much he liked “worked” art, which he meant to mean art that showed the “artist’s hand.”
