Most people agree that the Berliner Philharmoniker is one of the best and most respected orchestras in the world. The Berlin Philharmonic, led by Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, plays its first concerts in Florida during Petrenko’s first tour of the U.S. as chief conductor. The concerts are in Hayes Hall and take place right after each other.

The first piece on the first program of the prestigious orchestra’s first concert is Unstuck by the famous American composer Andrew Norman. This piece was inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s classic novel Slaughterhouse-Five. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 1 will be played by the 1st Concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Noah Bendix-Balgley. Also on the program is Korngold’s Symphony in F-sharp major, which the late composer Dimitri Mitropoulos called “the perfect modern work.”

Mahler’s lush Symphony No. 7 is on the second program of the prestigious orchestra’s first concert. It was written in just a few weeks after a long summer of writer’s block and was well received by critics when it was first played. Mahler’s masterpiece is a triumphant journey from darkness to light. Its two main themes go back and forth, and in the end, the rapturous ending bursts into light.

All tickets for Visiting Orchestras include admission to The Baker Museum on the same day. On the day of the show, the museum is open from 6 to 8 pm on Monday and 10 am to 8 pm on Tuesday. Also, Hayes Hall will open its doors 90 minutes before this performance. Come early to Heidi’s Place to see the shows and try some of the light food.

The Visiting Orchestras series is generously sponsored by Judy and Verne Istock.
