In 1993, Nancy and Kent Smith started the company Shy Wolf. They started taking in animals that government animal services, wildlife rehabilitation centers, or zoos wouldn’t take. Moondance, a Black Asian Leopard, was the first animal they saved.

In 2001, Shy Wolf became a 501(c)3 charity with an independent board of directors and volunteers who have helped it grow into what it is today. At Shy Wolf Sanctuary, a cougar, many wolves and wolfdogs, and several exotic species of foxes from as far south as Brazil, as far north as the Arctic Circle, and as far west as North Africa all find a safe place to live. Prairie Dogs, Florida Gopher Tortoises, Sugar Gliders, and a North American Bobcat are some of the other animals that have been saved. The endangered Florida Gopher Tortoise can only be taken care of at a few places, and Shy Wolf Sanctuary is one of them.

Shy Wolf has saved more than 1,260 animals and taught tens of thousands of people from all over the world from a couple of acres behind the Smiths’ house. But the space in our current building is full, so we are making plans to move to a 17-acre campus. Click here to find out more about our plans for the future.

Shy Wolf does a lot more than just rescue and sanctuary. For more than twenty years, they have had educational programs and therapeutic animal interactions. Different educational programs teach people how to live peacefully with wildlife and speak up for animals who can’t speak for themselves. Through our Healing Hearts program, Shy Wolf also works with local nonprofits to give hope and healing to young people who are in danger.

We hope you’ll visit Shy Wolf Sanctuary so you can see it for yourself and join our group of passionate supporters who help heal the hearts and minds of everyone who comes through our gates. https://shywolfsanctuary.org/
