Dvořák — String Quintet, Op. 97

James Ehnes, a world-famous violinist and longtime artistic friend of Artis—Naples, makes his first appearance of the 2022-23 season in this opening concert of the Wang Chamber Music series, which features a program of romantic and modern works. Dvoák’s String Quintet in E-flat, which Ehnes and other members of the Naples Philharmonic will play, was written to be “really melodic and simple” as a musical memento of the composer’s time in the American Midwest. Ehnes also plays Ysae’s Solo Violin Sonata No. 3, “Ballade.” This is one of six solo violin sonatas written for and dedicated to Romanian violinist Enesco. The woodwind players of the Naples Philharmonic also play Valerie Coleman’s Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet, which was inspired by Afro-Cuban and Santeria music.
